Coffee vs. Energy Drink

When you think of energy and needing to get that extra boost for your day, there seem to be a few schools of thought. Some might go for a sugary soda, but most get their morning buzz from either an energy drink or a cup of coffee. To make the healthiest decision for brain-boosting, let's pause to look at the differences between coffee and energy drinks.

Energy Drinks while known for a boost of energy and alertness, it also raises a red flag for health concerns. While a cup of coffee comfortably rests around 95mg of caffeine, an energy drink jumps around anywhere from 80mg-500mg of caffeine. While the drinks may help at the onset to improve brain function, it can wreak havoc in our bodies. Energy drink consumption is linked to heart and neurological issues.  In 2007-2014, hospital emergency room admissions, due to energy drinks, doubled according to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administrations Dawn Report. What’s in an energy drink? There are many to choose from, but most have a combination of caffeine, sugar, sugar substitute, guarana, high levels of taurine, ginseng, high b-vitamins (in high levels aren’t a good thing), and gingko biloba. While some of these can sound healthy, the amounts that they use can be harmful.

While coffee also improves mood, reaction time, memory, and vigilance, …it's also a powerful antioxidant. The coffee bean itself even contains nutrients. Some that make their way into the brew are Riboflavin, Pantothenic Acid, Manganese and Potassium, and Magnesium and Niacin, to name a few. Not only is coffee a highlight of our day, but it also can help you burn fat, lower your risk of developing several conditions like types of cancer, type 2 diabetes, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and more! Recent studies have generally found no connection between coffee and an increased risk of heart disease and cancer.
